Diplomats said on Tuesday that at least 550 pilgrims died during the Hajj. This tragic news highlights the tough conditions of the pilgrimage, which took place in extremely hot weather this year.
At least 323 of those who died were Egyptians, with most of them suffering from heat-related illnesses, according to two Arab diplomats who are coordinating their countries’ responses.
At least 60 Jordanians also died, according to the diplomats, an increase from the official count of 41 provided earlier on Tuesday by Amman.
These new figures raise the total death toll reported by multiple countries to 577. The diplomats mentioned that the total number of bodies at the morgue is 550.
Now these were the pilgrims who had visas, but Each year, tens of thousands of pilgrims try to perform the Hajj without official visas because they cannot afford the expensive procedures for getting them.
These unregistered pilgrims are at greater risk because they cannot use the air-conditioned facilities provided by Saudi authorities along the Hajj route.
Infact out of the 577 dead the high number of Egyptian deaths was “absolutely” due to the large number of unregistered Egyptian pilgrims.
The pilgrims went without food, water, or air conditioning for a long time.” They died “from the heat because most people had no place” to take shelter.
