Iran shot over 300 drones and missiles towards Israel, and surprisingly, Jordan, which has mostly Arab population joined Israel’s allies in intercepting them.
This is unexpected, especially after Jordan criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza, where many people died.
King Abdullah II’s response has been criticized by some pro-Palestine groups. Jordan says it shot down the Iranian drones to defend itself, not to support Israel. Jordan is in a tough spot because it’s not very strong militarily or financially, and it can’t afford to go to war with its neighbor.
Talking about the past then In 1948, Jordan was part of the Arab League countries that fought in the former Palestinian territory after the UN suggested dividing it into different parts.
After the war, Jordan controlled the West Bank and East Jerusalem and made them part of its own country in 1950.
But in 1967, Jordan and Israel were enemies again in the Six Day War. Jordan lost control of the West Bank and Jerusalem to Israel. Then, in 1994, Jordan made peace with Israel by signing a treaty. This was the second Arab country, after Egypt, to do so.
After making peace, Israel and Jordan started letting people cross their borders. Today, the border they share, which is about 309 kilometers long, is very calm.
