In a bid to repair strained ties between Pakistan and Iran, officials from both countries recently convened for a crucial meeting.
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi visited Pakistan on Monday on a three-day visit to improve their relationship, which got tense after airstrikes were done on each other’s territories because of alleged terrorist activity.
Both Iran and Pakistan have accused each other of sheltering armed groups. Earlier this year, Iran conducted airstrikes on what it claimed were militant hideouts in Balochistan province. In response, Pakistan sent drones and rockets to target supposed terrorist hideouts in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province. Despite this exchange, both countries avoided further escalating tensions.
Meanwhile Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif brought up the Kashmir issue with visiting Iranian President and appreciated Iran’s support for Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir. However, Raisi decided not to mention the Kashmir issue at all during his media statement after the meeting with Sharif, which seemed like a disregard for the Pakistani hosts.
Well this is not the first time when Pakistan raised Kashmir issue in the place where they weren’t required to, earlier Pakistan raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, that’s what they call at the UN Human Rights Council, of which India replied it cannot pay any attention to a country which is soaked in red due to the bloodshed from terrorism that it sponsors around the world.
Coming back to the meetup then Iran’s president Raisi stated during a joint news conference that the current level of bilateral commerce between Iran and Pakistan is “not acceptable” and that the two countries have decided to raise it to USD 10 billion.
