India and Israel – two nations with a strong and strategic partnership that spans decades. Today, we explore a lesser-known chapter of their relationship, one that involves mutual support in times of conflict and cooperation in defense. The year was 1999, and India found itself in the midst of the Kargil conflict. Pakistani troops had infiltrated the Indian side of the Line of Control in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. The conflict was intense, and India needed urgent assistance.
During the Kargil conflict, Israel helped India by providing important military equipment. This included drones, laser-guided bombs, and surveillance systems. This support was very important for India’s success in the conflict.
Fast forward to today, and the bond between India and Israel has only grown stronger. India, now a major global player in defense manufacturing, is reciprocating Israel’s support.
According to Daniel Carmon, a former Israeli ambassador to India, India might be sending weapons to Israel to “return the favor” for Israel’s help during the 1999 Kargil War. This help included important military support.
According to the Indian media, during the 1999 conflict, Israel gave India military supplies like guided missiles and drones.
The former ambassador’s comments come as news reports say that India has sent drones and artillery to Israel to help their forces in the fight with Gaza, as supplies are running low due to the long conflict.
India and Israel’s relationship is a testament to how nations can come together, support each other in times of need, and build a partnership that benefits both. The story of their cooperation during the Kargil conflict and beyond is a powerful reminder of the strength of international alliances.
