In a heartbreaking turn of events, more than 100 Palestinians have been killed and dozens more injured in an Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza. The school was reportedly being used as a shelter for displaced people.
According to the official Palestinian news agency, over 100 Palestinians were killed and many more were injured in an Israeli attack on a school in Gaza that was sheltering people who had been displaced. However, Israel disputes this report, stating that the strike was targeted at Hamas operatives who were allegedly using the school as a command center.
The Hamas-run Gaza government media office said that Israeli attacks hit the Al-Taba’een school in Gaza City early in the morning while people were praying. They reported that this resulted in forty deaths and many injuries. This information was shared by spokesman Mahmoud Basal on Telegram.
Basal called the incident “a horrific massacre” and said that some of the bodies caught fire.
The Gaza war has attracted groups from Iran and increased fears that the conflict might spread across the Middle East. This worry grew after the killing of two top militants, including a leader from Hamas, led to promises of retaliation.
Tensions in the region have increased since Ismail Haniyeh, a Hamas leader, was killed in Iran on July 31, likely by an Israeli strike. People have been expecting retaliation because of his death.
World leaders are pushing for a cease-fire in Gaza. Israel agreed to indirect talks with Hamas, following a proposal from the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar to resume cease-fire talks on August 15.
