The Biden administration is reportedly considering imposing sanctions on the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF’s) Netzah Yehuda battalion for alleged human rights abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank.
Israeli leaders are protesting against this, saying they’ll oppose sanctions on any Israeli military unit. If implemented, this would mark the first time the US has taken such action against Israel’s defense forces.
Meanwhile, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to reject any sanction on the country’s military. In an official statement he said that If anyone thinks they can impose sanction on a unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). I will fight with all my strength. Meanwhile, the IDF has said that the battalion is an active combat unit that follows the principles of international law.
Here let’s understand why the US may impose its first ever sanctions on an Israeli military unit
The Netzah Yehuda battalion has faced numerous controversies in the past, including incidents of violence and right-wing extremism against Palestinians. However, one particular case stands out.
The US called for a criminal investigation into Netzah Yehuda soldiers after they were accused of involvement in the death of a 78-year-old Palestinian-American, Omar Assad. Assad passed away from a heart attack in 2022 after being detained, blindfolded, handcuffed, and left in near-freezing conditions by the battalion’s soldiers. An autopsy revealed that Assad died from a stress-induced heart attack, allegedly triggered by mistreatment.
However, there have been other incidents over the years where Netzah Yehuda soldiers have been accused of, and even charged with, abusing Palestinian detainees.
