Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have sharply increased, leading to a serious conflict in the Middle East.
This escalation marks a significant and troubling development in the region, as both sides engage in intense clashes that have far-reaching consequences for both local communities and global stability.
Today, Hezbollah, a militant group from Lebanon that gets support from Iran, and Israel both started big military actions against each other. Hezbollah announced that they fired over 320 Katyusha rockets at important Israeli military locations. This move marks a significant escalation in their conflict.
In response to Hezbollah’s rockets, Israel conducted pre-emptive strikes on targets in Lebanon. They acted after detecting Hezbollah’s plans for larger attacks and used fighter jets to target positions threatening Israeli civilians.
Meanwhile, The Israeli military said that about 100 fighter jets attacked and destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers in southern Lebanon. Most of these launchers were targeting northern Israel, and some were aimed at central Israel.
The recent conflict has escalated after weeks of rising tension where Hezbollah and Iran vowed to retaliate for the killing of their leader, Fuad Shukr, which they view as a direct act of war.
Hezbollah, reacting to Shukr’s killing, launched a major drone and rocket attack on Israel, hitting various targets including Iron Dome systems and military positions. They said the military operations will take time to finish.
Later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a security meeting early today. His office announced that Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has declared a 48-hour state of emergency across the country. This special measure allows the military to impose new restrictions on civilians to help manage the situation.
Since the Gaza war started in October, Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging fire almost daily along their border. This recent escalation has raised concerns that the conflict might spread into a larger war in Lebanon.
The current escalation started after Hamas’s major attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, which killed nearly 1,200 people. In response, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza, resulting in over 40,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
