Vice President Kamala Harris aimed to use the influence of Oprah Winfrey and other Hollywood stars to win over undecided voters during an online rally on Thursday night. Oprah Winfrey pointed out that something changed for Harris when President Biden decided not to run. She felt that Harris became more confident and fully embraced her role as the Democratic nominee.
In responded, Harris replied that everyone has moments when they need to step up, and she feels a strong sense of purpose with the upcoming election in November.
The event aimed to use Oprah Winfrey’s popularity, especially after she endorsed Harris at the Democratic National Convention last month. It felt like an episode of Oprah’s talk show, with Harris answering questions from Oprah and listening to guests in a live audience near Detroit. Celebrities like Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Chris Rock joined in online too.
Before the event started, Harris’s campaign announced that nearly 200,000 people had signed up to attend. They also expected many more to join via different social media platforms where the event was streaming.
Meanwhile, On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris warned that if someone tries to break into her home, she would defend herself and use a gun.
During an interview with Oprah Winfrey in front of a live audience, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris talked about gun laws and made a comment about defending her home with a gun. She jokingly said, “I probably should not have said that. But my staff will deal with that later,” while laughing.
Harris, who is protected by the U.S. Secret Service, made her comment about home defense at a time when there is growing worry about political violence. This concern has increased after a second possible assassination attempt was made against her opponent in the upcoming presidential election, Donald Trump.
Trump supports having few limits on guns and ammunition, while Harris wants to ban assault weapons, implement stricter background checks for gun buyers, and create “red flag” laws to temporarily remove guns from people considered dangerous.
Harris told Winfrey that she supports the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which protects the right to own guns.
She also talked about her gun ownership in 2019 when she was a U.S. senator, and she mentioned it again in last week’s debate with Trump. This seemed like a way to connect with more conservative voters.
