West Bengal is gearing up for phase 5 of lok sabha elections , while the state is gearing up for crucial voting day, shocking statistics have emerged regarding the candidates vying for power. In West Bengal, seven of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies will go to polls in the fifth phase on May 20 but Twenty-one out of the 88 candidates and that is 24 percent of the West Bengal candidates have criminal cases against them, as per their affidavits filed before the Election Commission of India.
This phase will witness the highest percentage of candidates with declared criminal cases among the five rounds of polling in the State
A report from the West Bengal Election Watch released on Tuesday reveals that out of 67 candidates with criminal cases, 52 are facing serious charges, including murder and crimes against women.
According to the report by the ADR, 71% of the candidates with criminal background have been fielded by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — the highest in the State – in the fifth phase. It is followed by the CPI(M), with 60 per cent of candidates with declared criminal cases.
Arjun Singh from the BJP, contesting from Barrackpore, has the highest number of declared criminal cases in West Bengal across all five phases of polling. According to a press statement by ADR, he is facing 93 cases. Singh won the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket in 2019 but later switched to the Trinamool Congress. However, when the Trinamool denied him a ticket from Barrackpore this time, he returned to the BJP.
Union Minister Santanu Thakur, the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Bongaon constituency, faces 23 criminal cases.
Can you imagine, 24 percent and that’s a lot means 79 candidates contesting in phase 5 of lok sabah elections are already accussed of being criminals in West Bengal. Having candidates with criminal backgrounds not only damages the reputation of democracy but also erodes the trust of the voters.
Now coming to the elections then, The West Bengal Assembly is going for polls in fifth phases on 20 May.
