This election season, India is getting ready for one of the longest voting processes ever. The media is buzzing with news about the promises, accusations, arrests, and discussions of political leaders as they campaign and show off their strong connections with the people, especially in rural areas, which are at the core of India.
And another development in this election has come forward when India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has accussed Congress of deploying “deepfakes” to “mislead” people during elections campaign in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third term in a row.
A dispute started when Congress leaders shared a video in which a BJP lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh named Dinesh Lal Yadav, also known as Nirahua, was heard making controversial comments about PM Modi and the state’s chief minister, Yogi Adityanath.
In the video Yadav is heard saying that both PM Modi and Adityanath helped reduce unemployment by not having children of their own.
Taking to X, the BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya alleged that the video circulated by the Congress leaders was fake and that the Azamgarh MP will file an FIR against Indian Youth Congress (IYC) national president Srinivas BV for sharing the clip.
As India gears up for its elections, there’s a growing concern about the role of AI in shaping the political landscape.
AI technologies have the potential to impact elections in various ways, from influencing voter behavior to shaping political messaging and campaign strategies.
As technology continues to evolve, it’s crucial to address these challenges and ensure transparency, accountability, and ethical use of AI in elections. Ultimately, safeguarding the democratic principles upon which India’s electoral system is built.
