On Monday, during the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, voting took place in 49 parliamentary constituencies across six states and two Union territories. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the voter turnout was 60.48% by 11:30 PM. This means that a little over 60% of eligible voters in these areas cast their votes.
But 1 fact will shock you here, In the fifth phase, Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir had a voter turnout of 54.21% by 5 PM and this is higher than Mumbai’s turnout, which was the lowest at 48.88%. Baramulla’s turnout is especially notable because it’s the highest in almost forty years.
In Mumbai, the Mumbai North West constituency had the highest voter turnout at 49.79%. It was followed by Bhiwandi with 49.43%, Mumbai South Central with 48.80%, Mumbai North East with 48.67%, Mumbai North Central with 47.46%, and Mumbai South with 44.63%.
This election marks a record for the Baramulla constituency in north Kashmir. The voter turnout this time is the highest for any general election in the last thirty-five years. The previous highest turnout was 61.09% during the 1984 general elections.
With the end of phase 5, voting is now complete in 25 states and Union Territories, covering 428 parliamentary constituencies. Polling is also finished for the State Legislative Assemblies in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, and 63 assembly seats in Odisha.
The sixth phase of voting is set for May 25, covering 58 parliamentary constituencies, including the rescheduled poll in Anantnag-Rajouri, across 8 states and Union Territories.
The general elections are being conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The votes for all 543 Lok Sabha seats will be counted on June 4.
