Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke about the electoral bonds scheme, which was scrapped by the Supreme Court last month. He rejected any idea that it was a setback. Instead, he emphasized that his government’s introduction of the scheme made sources of political funding and beneficiaries public.
During an interview with Thanti TV, a prominent Tamil news channel, he warned that those criticising the use of electoral bonds will “soon regret it.”
“Before 2014, there was no trail of funds given to political parties during elections. I introduced the electoral bonds. Thanks to the electoral bonds, we can now trace the source of funding.
Those who are happy about it today will regret tomorrow. I ask these experts—how many elections were held before 2014? There must have been expenses in those elections, right? Can any organisation tell where that money came from?
After PM Modi’s remark The Congress hit out at him, claiming that while the corruption of his government had been known for a while, the setback is that there are now “hard numbers to prove it”.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh attacked Modi and said “Every single day the prime minister scales new heights of hypocrisy and plumbs new depths of dishonesty. “The prime minister has fully lied to the nation in his latest interview to a Tamil television channel. He claims that ‘where funds have come from, how they are being used’ is only known due to the Electoral Bond Scheme instituted by him,”
Well, after supporting electrol bonds, PM Modi also denied allegations of misuse of central agencies against opposition parties. He said that ED and other agencies operate independently.
In recent years ED has faced criticism, especially from India’s Opposition, which accuses it of being responsible for their difficulties. People wonder if the ED is too harsh and if it unfairly targets the Opposition.
