Tensions escalate in Eastern Europe as a Russian bomber breaches the airspace of NATO member Finland, just hours after a Ukrainian Su-57 jet reportedly strikes a Russian aircraft.
Reportedly the plane was flying at least 2.5km inside the country’s territory. Russia confirmed that it had several bombers and missile carriers operating in the Baltic region but did not directly address the reported airspace breach.
Finland’s defense ministry reported that one of the aircraft entered Finland’s airspace for about two minutes on Monday morning. Finnish officials said they are taking the “suspected territorial violation” seriously and have started an investigation.
The Kremlin uses such operations to purposely challenge Finland’s territorial and sovereign integrity, according to the US-based think-tank, The Institute for the Study of War.
This incident follows Kyiv’s statement that it had targeted a Russian Su-57 stealth fighter, valued at up to £28 million, around 370 miles from the frontline using long-range drones.
Ukraine also claimed to have damaged three Russian surface-to-air defense systems in missile attacks on occupied Crimea on Sunday night. The Russian air defense assets in occupied Crimea were likely hit by US-supplied ATACMS missiles.
As the situation unfolds, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the escalating tensions between Russia, Ukraine, and neighboring countries.
