In a significant and alarming development, Russia has commenced large-scale nuclear drills, a move widely interpreted as a warning to the West amid escalating tensions over Ukraine.
On Tuesday, Russia’s military started exercises that included practicing with tactical nuclear weapons. These drills had been announced earlier in the month by Russian authorities. This move seemed to be a warning to top Western leaders who had mentioned the possibility of getting more involved in the war in Ukraine.
This was the first time Russia publicly announced exercises with tactical nuclear weapons. Normally, only their larger, strategic nuclear forces hold regular exercises.
The Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that the first part of these new exercises involved practicing how to prepare and use smaller nuclear weapons. This included practicing with Kinzhal and Iskander missiles that can carry nuclear warheads.
The exercises are happening in the Southern Military District, which includes parts of southern Russia, areas on the border with Ukraine, Crimea, which Russia took from Ukraine in 2014, and four regions in Ukraine that Russia claimed in 2022 but only partly controls.

These military exercises are happening while Western countries keep supplying weapons to Ukraine, which has been fighting against Russia for more than two years. The West has provided military equipment and intelligence but hasn’t sent any troops.
Experts see these exercises as a clear warning from Putin to the West to stop interfering in the Ukraine war. Nikolai Sokov, a former Soviet and Russian arms control official, told Reuters that the exercises are a response to talks about NATO troops in Ukraine. Western militaries will closely watch these exercises to see how much warning they might get if Russia uses such weapons.
The exercises also respond to statements by Western politicians. Politico reported that British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said during a visit to Kyiv that Ukraine could attack Russia with British weapons, and French President Macron suggested that Western troops might go to Ukraine. Now Russia has begun nuclear weapons exercises near the Ukrainian border and this is a clear signal to the West to stop helping Ukraine or else the consequences is the big.
