In a bold move, the United States has redirected seized Iranian weapons to Ukraine, amidst rising tensions in the region.
Last week, the United States gave Ukraine thousands of infantry weapons and over 5 lakhs rounds of ammunition. These weapons were taken over a year ago when they as they were being shipped by Iran to Houthi forces in Yemen
CENTCOM said they sent over 5,000 AK-47 assault rifles, along with machine guns, sniper rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, and more than 500,000 rounds of ammunition to Ukraine. These weapons were taken from four ships that didn’t belong to any country. U.S. naval ships and other partner forces stopped these ships between May 22, 2021, and February 15, 2023
The weapons were being sent by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to the Houthis.
This equipment is the newest help that President Joe Biden’s administration has given to Kyiv. It’s meant to support Ukraine in its effort to regain land occupied by Russia.
Democratic President Biden wanted to give more weapons to Kyiv, but Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson stopped it by not allowing a vote on $60 billion in new security aid.
Because Ukrainian forces are running out of weapons and ammunition, especially heavy artillery rounds.
U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted on X,” The weaponry transferred by the United States to Kyiv on April 4 “constituted enough materiel to equip” a Ukrainian brigade.
On the other hand, Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations said, “We cannot comment on weapons and armaments that have never belonged to us.”
The United States and its friends are looking for different ways to help Ukraine get armed.
