May 9 is a is an important day in the history of Russians as they celebrated Victory Day in Russia and several other former Soviet republics. On this day the Russians remember their victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. It marks the official surrender of German forces in Berlin, which happened in 1945, bringing an end to the war in Europe.
President Vladimir Putin, who became the leader of Russia not long after the Soviet Union collapsed, generally give speeches at the Victory Day parade on Red Square in Moscow.
Parades take place in major cities across Russia’s 11 timezones. During the Moscow parade, it’s usual to see rows of Russian military equipment, like advanced missiles and air defense systems. Also, thousands of military personnel wear special ceremonial uniforms as part of the event.
This time, unlike in previous parades, leaders from Western countries won’t be attending. Russia mentioned that ambassadors from “unfriendly” countries, which mainly refers to Western nations and those supporting Ukraine, haven’t been invited to the parade.
Now her let me take you a decade back and give you a flashback on what happened in the past.
Once upon a time, in the early 1940s, there was one of the deadliest conflict called World War II. In this war, the Soviet Union, led by Joseph Stalin, was fighting against a strong enemy called Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler.
When World War II was about to start, Germany, led by Hitler, launched a fierce attack on June 22, 1941. This attack was called Operation Barbarossa. German soldiers quickly moved into Soviet territory with the aim of defeating the Soviet Union and becoming the dominant power in Europe.
The Soviet Union was taken by surprise by the sudden attack. German armies pushed far into Soviet territory, putting cities like Moscow in danger. However, despite the chaos and destruction, the people of the Soviet Union showed great determination and bravery in resisting the invasion.
During the war, people from all across the Soviet Union came together to defend their homeland. The Red Army, with brave soldiers and determined leaders, fought hard against the invading German forces.
In harsh weather conditions, from freezing winters to scorching summers, battles raged across Russia. Important battles like Stalingrad turned the tide of the war in favor of the Soviets.
The Eastern Front saw some of the deadliest battles in history, with many lives lost on both sides. The Siege of Leningrad lasted a long 872 days, testing the resilience of its defenders who faced starvation and hardship but refused to give up.
The Soviet Union received vital support from Allies like the United States, who sent supplies and equipment through the Lend-Lease program. This aid helped the Soviets keep fighting against the invaders.
As time went on, the Soviets launched successful offensives like Operation Bagration and the Battle of Kursk, which pushed the Germans back towards their own territory.
Finally, after years of hard fighting, Soviet forces reached Berlin, the capital of Nazi Germany, and fought fiercely to take the city. On May 9, 1945, Germany surrendered, and Victory in Europe Day was celebrated worldwide. This marked the end of a dark period in history and the triumph of the Soviet Union, which is now Russia, over tyranny and oppression.
And this is the reason why May 9, is celebrated in Russia on a really grand scale.
