In recent diplomatic news, tensions are brewing between Russia and Pakistan over rice imports.

Pakistan, known for its robust rice industry, is facing a potential setback as Russia issues a warning regarding the safety of its rice exports.

Russia has warned Pakistan it might ban rice imports if their concerns are not addressed in future consignments.

The Russian agency responsible for checking food safety, called FSVPS, said that some rice imported from Pakistan didn’t meet the international and Russian safety rules.

According to Dawn report, The notification, which came out on April 2, 2024 says that there’s a bug called ‘Megaselia scalaris (Loew)’ found in the rice shipment.

Magaselia scalaris is a type of fly commonly known as the “coffin fly” or “humpbacked fly.” This fly is often associated with decomposing organic matter, including animal carcasses and sewage. In certain situations, it can also infest stored food products, including grains like rice, posing a potential risk to food safety and hygiene.

The FSVPS has requested the person in charge of trade from the Pakistani embassy in Russia to look into this issue right away.

A document from the Russian authorities says that the FSVPS has told the Pakistani embassy to make sure these problems don’t happen again. They’ve stressed how important it is to follow safety rules for agricultural products traded between the two countries.

Well in 2019 a similar case happened when Russia banned the import of rice from Pakistan due to health and safety concerns.

Similar to this, Russia banned the import of rice from Pakistan in December 2006 due to noncompliance with food safety regulations.

Chela Ram Kewlani, who leads the Pakistan Rice Exporters Association, warned rice exporters to be very careful when choosing and packing rice for export. He mentioned that because India, a big player in global rice trade, stopped exporting certain types of rice last year, Pakistan has been benefited.

India stopped exporting white, non-Basmati, parboiled rice last year. A well-known Pakistani rice trader reported shipping over 700,000 tons of rice in December 2023 which is the biggest monthly shipment for that fiscal year.”
