Taiwan experienced its strongest earthquake in 25 years on Wednesday. At least nine people died, and hundreds were injured. Buildings, highways, and train services were damaged.
Despite facing strong earthquakes before, Taiwan has managed to keep the damage relatively low for its 23 million residents. Experts credit this to Taiwan’s excellent earthquake preparedness measures.
Taiwan is located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent earthquakes. This area encircles the Pacific Ocean and is where many of the world’s earthquakes happen.
The region is especially prone to earthquakes because of the pressure built up from the movement of two tectonic plates: the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Sometimes, this pressure is released suddenly, causing earthquakes.
The mountainous region can magnify the ground shaking, leading to landslides.
How Well-equipped is Taiwan to handle quakes?
Taiwan has strict rules for how buildings are made. They have to be strong enough to handle earthquakes. This includes not just buildings, but also bridges and other structures. They’re designed to resist the shaking from earthquakes, which lowers the chance of them falling down during a quake.
The government in Taiwan works hard to make sure people know what to do in case of an earthquake. They run campaigns to teach people about earthquake safety. They emphasize actions like “drop, cover, and hold on” during a quake. Schools and workplaces also practice earthquake drills regularly. This helps everyone be prepared in case of a real earthquake.
