A 2,700-year-old temple has been found by archaeologists in Turkey, according to the LiveScience report. This temple, located close to the contemporary city of Denizli, is believed to relate to the time of the Phrygians, who occupied the space approximately between 1200 and 650 BCE.

Where exactly was the ancient temple with twin rock idols found?

The Phrygians worshipped a mother goddess who was associated with nature and fertility, by various names: Materan, Matar, and Cybele. The influence of this goddess extended beyond Phrygia, as she was also worshiped by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The goddess’s cult continued long after the Phrygian kingdom — ruled likely by King Midas — declined.

Historical records show that the worship of mother goddesses existed in ancient Greece and Rome, and evolved even after the Phrygian Empire.

Bilge Yilmaz Kolancı, an archaeology professor at Pamukkale University, told Live Science that the new sacred area contains Phrygian rock monuments, a sacred cave, and two statues, among other structures. In a mail to Live Science, Bilge Yılmaz Kolancı said,”The sacred site includes a Phrygian rock monument, a sacred cave, and twin rock idols between [two] structures.”

As stated in a report by Live Science, the images indicate that the rock idols have been cut into the face of the cliff. According to Professor Kolancı, the site contains “numerous libation bowls and drainage channels.”
