Come monsoons and your hair-care woes seem to double. In monsoons, people generally tend to experience sudden and severe hair-fall. Most of the times, it is the sudden climate change coupled with high humidity, increased pollution and the excessive dirt and dust disruption that causes the hair-fall. Additionally, it also leads to increased dandruff, itchy scalp and the moist conditions are perfect breeding grounds for scalp infections. Monsoons often vex all hair lovers as the hair is falling out in clumps and there seems to be no solution in sight. But then, there are ways to protect your hair and keep it healthy even in this fickle weather. Read on to know some tips and methods in which you can keep your tresses healthy and long even in monsoons.

1. Diet

Monsoons often call for a lot of junk. The romantic or dull weather (depending on your monsoon hate scale of 1 to 10) somehow makes people eat a whole lot of oily and junk food. The greasiness coupled with the bad weather naturally wreaks havoc on your system and also results in hair-fall. Instead, try eating healthy and take care that you incorporate foods which your hair loves in your diet. Instead of your regular breakfast, begin your day with some sprouts. Add some flax seeds to your salads or eat a spoonful after your meal. Includes a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Always stay careful about what you eat.

2. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo

In rainfall, you sometimes need to care for your hair a little differently. If possible, increase the frequency of your washing. The humidity often attracts a lot of dirt and dust to your hair which then settles down and makes hair brittle and heavy. Try washing your hair atleast twice a week in the rains. If you accidentally (or deliberately) get drenched in the rains, don’t let your hair dry naturally. Rain water is unfortunately no longer pure but full of chemicals thanks to pollution. Gently wash your drenched hair with a mild shampoo, condition it and let it naturally dry. You can even switch to natural shampoos or home-based shampoos for this season.

3. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

Don’t forget to oil and moisturise your hair in this weather. Although your hair feels sticky and at times greasy due to the humidity, give it a nice warm oil massage either the night before hair-wash or atleast 20 mins before wash. If the regular oils don’t suit your hair and if your roots are weak for a massage, then use essential oils. Mix the essential oils with water and gently apply. The oils are extremely light and will get instantly absorbed by your hair. Your hair won’t feel heavy and it will be smooth and silky. You can use essential oils any time of the day and as many times as you want! Choose an oil that suits your skin best and mix 3-4 essential oils to create your custom blend.

4. Use a wide-toothed comb

In monsoons, there’s generally a lot of wind and your hair can get completely messed up and tangled. Additionally, the hair is damp and moist meaning it can break off easily. To avoid hair hassles, use a wide toothed comb in the monsoons. Avoid wooden combs unless you’re absolutely sure they’re dry and clean as wooden combs can develop fungus and lead to more hair woes. Make sure the bristles of the brush you use are gentle and do not tug your hair too hard. Also, instead of leaving your hair open all day, you can tie a loose plait or knot while travelling. This will prevent tangling and consequent breaking and also make hair easier to manage.

5. Avoid hair dryers and colouring

Got drenched in the rain and don’t want to sit with wet hair? The blow dryer can sound like a simple and easy solution. However, it is not. It is instead extremely unhealthy and unsafe for your hair. Instead of using the dryer which can over-dry your hair and cause further damage, use paper towels to gently wipe the moisture off your hair and dry it. You can also use cotton towels and pat your hair gently with it. Also, avoid colouring in this season as the chemicals will cause more harm to hair and create a lot of issues with it. Also, caring for the hair can be difficult in the monsoons and the colouring can increase complications.

6. Use good serums and natural hair packs

If you’re the sorts who hates everything chemical, create and use natural hair packs but make sure you try and use a hairpack atleast once every 2 weeks if not more. Use everything from aloe-vera gel to curry leaves powder mixed with warm water and oil, methi powder, honey and curd mix, eggs etc. If you can manage it, try washing your hair with beer after a cold rinse as beer works as a great moisturiser for your hair. If you’re too lazy, get a serum from a good brand. Consult your dermatologist or hair-dresser before investing in a serum as they are on the expensive side and if one doesn’t suit your hair, it can cause more damage than good.
