A week after playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s Twitter account was suspended on the social media platform, the singer is back on the micro-blogging site. However, within hours of his return with a new handle @singerabhijeet, Twitter suspended his account for a second time. The playback singer’s verified account on Twitter was suspended over offensive and sexist remarks targeted at some women users and especially JNU student-activist Shehla Rashid last week. On May 23, Twitter has suspended Abhijeet’s official accounts over his controversial remarks targeting Shehla Rashid. Singer Sonu Nigam who had lent his support to his fellow playback singer has subsequently deleted his Twitter account in retaliation against Twitter’s policies. Abhijeet Bhattacharya, posted a video on his handle after rejoining Twitter and wrote, “People are trying to suppress my voice. I am against those who try to speak against the nation and the Indian Army. This is my new Twitter account. Till the time my verified account is not active, please follow me on this Twitter account. All other accounts by my name are fake and are trying to malign my reputation.” Abhijeet Bhattacharya wrote another post on his Twitter handle, “Vande Mataram. I am back. Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s bio on his new Twitter handle read, “I am the best….I am the best”, these are the lines taken from his popular song from Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla starrer Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. The Twitter account did not last long but it remains to be seen what new steps the singer undertakes to get back to voicing his opinions and views.
