Bad news for Momo lovers, which is basically all of us – our delicious savoury is under attack. You have heard it right. After the beef ban, we may soon have ban on momos, if BJP MLC Ramesh Arora’s shocking statements is to go by. The BJP lawmaker in Jammu has declared war against momos, the undisputed street food champion. Food choices have become a massive topic of debate in India and adding fuel to the fire is the recent attack by the Bharatiya Janata Party leader. Calling momos harmful and ‘root cause of several life-threatening diseases’ including cancer, Arora wants a complete ban on momos leaving Twitterati angry and very, very intolerant.

Ramesh Arora, a BJP legislator and lawyer, gave a baffling statement saying, “Momos have been found to be the root cause of several life-threatening diseases, including cancer of the intestine.” He backed his claim with a scientific explanation referring to the use of monosodium glutamate (MSG), a common ingredient in many oriental dishes. The man continued to harp on wiping out the favourite Indian snack at a public event saying the momos are addictive and dangerous like drugs!

According to National Herald India reports, MLC Ramesh Arora was quoted saying, Our teenagers are getting addicted to the dumplings like drugs. It’s spoiling their health. We have to stop it.” He is seeking an immediate ban on momos not only due to the health hazards but also wants to keep the foreigners involved in the business in check. His statement “foreigners including Bangladeshi and Burmese” clearly reflected an element of xenophobia to his ban momos campaign.

The man who is on a mission to wipe out the traditional snack organised a seminar on the subject in Jammu which was attended by senior members of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, doctors and academics besides officials from the municipal corporation, Drug and Food Control Department and the district administration. But Ramesh Arora’s demand on banning momos has left the Twitterati fuming in anger.

1. BJP lawmaker wants ban on momoms

2. Wait, what? Momos are anti-national

3. Great reasoning to save momos!

4. Sad state of affairs

5. We love, we love Momos!!

Momos will survive or not but the BJP leader seems to be in no mood to let his guards down against the ban. Ramesh Aroroa went on to call momos as killers! He said, “Momo is a killer and we cannot allow a killer to grow in a civilised society. Ajinomoto is dangerous for health.” Ajinomoto is “generally recognised as safe” by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that regulates and supervises food and drugs in the United States and is used in numerous food and not just momos. It is to be seen if momos-ban would go the same extent as the controversial beef ban was carried out in India. As of now, continue voicing your opinion against the unfair call for ban on momos on Twitter and hope it is not actually banned.
