The first city to get the ‘Wall of Kindness’ was Hyderabad and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation along with the residents of Rajendranagar designed the wall for the poor, needy people. The primary motive of this initiative was to leave things for the poor individuals who cannot afford clothes, shoes, books and other necessities to live life in a better way. People also donated blankets, utensils and other materials which are in good condition. In India, poverty is the leading social ailment which needs to be eradicated.

Recently, Tirunelveli Collector Sandeep Nanduri has done his bit towards eradicating poverty. He converted a wall at the collectorate office compound into a ‘Wall of Kindness’. Isn’t this just amazing and so thoughtful of him? In the picture, we can see books; toys, clothes, shoes kept for the needy people. The collector said that people could leave any items on the shelves that are attached to the wall. The ‘Wall of Kindness’ is properly painted in bright colours along with a powerful message which reads, “Donate it, if you don’t need it! Take it, if you need!”

The wall invites people to donate things which can be used by the needy people. The collector made an important point during the inauguration and said each household must be having several things in their cupboards which are not used. He said there is no use of accumulating things if it is not being utilised and it’s better to help others by donating things. Tirunelveli Collector Sandeep Nanduri even spoke why he chose the office compound and started the project. He said, “It is a place where lot of people come, petitioners come, and poor people come, that is why we thought of starting it here.”

“It will also create awareness among people. We are looking at the responses, and if it is successful we will expand it to other public areas,” Nanduri said to The News Minute. The Wall of Kindness was opened on Monday and received a good response from the locales. Nanduri even assured people that he would make sure that the donated items will not get wet in rains. He even said that he might collaborate with an NGO so that they can reach out to orphanages also. “We make sure that things do not get wet if it rains. We are thinking of tying up with some NGOs. If there are items which are there for a long time, the NGO can take it and give it off to orphanages,” he added.

A daily wage labourer was quoted while he was picking clothes from the wall, who said “We are very grateful to the collector to start such an initiative. We got saree, pants and shirts. It is a very good scheme.” The concept of ‘Wall of Kindness’ was started in Iran and gradually became popular in other parts of the country. Even India adopted this initiative in several parts of states including Rajasthan, Bhopal and Delhi NCR.

Sunderrajan, a businessman, who donated clothes said “I’m very happy that Tirunelveli has become the first district to start such an initiative. We have donated shoes, chappals, toys and clothes here,” he says. Many people appreciated Sandeep Nanduri’s initiative. “This would also be a good means to make use of books, which could be circulated many times, free of cost helping many,’ said Joseph a resident of Tirunelveli.
