“I work in India, and pay all my taxes in India. He concluded by saying: “Lastly, I would like to continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger.”
Soon after he issued the statement, people started labelling him as ‘liar’ and ‘fake nationalist’.Some users even called him a ‘hypocrite’. One user wrote, “If someone’s British/Italian origin/citizenship can be discussed, why can’t someone else’s Canadian citizenship also be questioned? Those who live in glass houses…#AkshayKumar.” While the other tweeted, “Not only is he a Canadian citizen but he wants to settle down in Canada after he retires. India is not good enough for him I guess, or it is only to help him make money and give him name and fame. #akshaykumar Shame.”

In 2017, Akshay had told TimesNow that he has been bestowed with honorary citizenship by the Canadian Government, and hence, he carries the Canadian citizenship. The actor, who recently grabbed headlines for his ‘non-political’ interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was widely trolled for not casting his vote this year.
“Chaliye, chaliye (let’s go, let’s go)” is how Akshay responded when at a special screening of the film Blank, a media person asked him about giving voting a miss. He then walked away.
