Akshaya Tritiya 2018: Significance & History:
According to certain mythological tales and folklore, Akshaya Tritiya was the day when Lord Parshuram (the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu) was born. Some also say that on this particular day, Lord Ganesha started writing the Mahabharata which was being recited by Ved Vyas. As per another legend, it was on this day, river Ganges first descended upon earth from heaven. While the others believe that Akshaya Tritiya is tied to the legend of the Akshaya Patra- the miracle earthen pot gifted to Draupadi, which ensured Pandavas had a never-ending supply of food. One of the many legends included that on this day, as per Shiva Purana, is that on Akshaya Tritiya, Kuber was made the lord of riches and banker of Heaven by Lord Shiva.

Akshaya Tritiya 2018: How do people celebrate this auspicious festival?
People start the day by praying and worshipping Lord Vishnu and his wife Goddess Lakshmi, his co-custodian of treasure on this day. Apart from lighting joss sticks in their house, people create a paste of Chandan, Kumkum and haldi and put a tikka on the idol of the deity. It is also considered as one of the luckiest days to initiate newer beginnings like buying new lands, investing in gold or anything that adds up to the savings, etc. In fact, Akshaya Tritiya is also considered an important day for the Jain community as it commemorates the first Tirthankara’s ending his one-year asceticism by consuming sugarcane juice.
