Mumbai, September 15: Thousands of Indians are today celebrating the Ananta Chaturdashi, which means the last and final day of the 11 day long Ganesha festival. In Maharashtra, people will today take out processions with a lot of fervour and fan fare and immerse them into water or water bodies nearest to them. The street processions are an absolute delight for the senses. Although there is too much noise, the devotion and the energy in the air is communicable and one cannot stop themselves from joining in, in the merry making. The street processions are usually accompanied with a band or a dj, which plays devotional and other upbeat songs which sing praise to the darling elephant headed God. Thousands of people join in, in the street processions, which can be seen flocking towards the sea, by the hundereds. Mumbai roads and streets are chock full of people dancing to the beat of the drums or to the upbeat songs. People also shout slogans in the praise of the God. The slogans are a characteristic of Ganpati celebrations in Mumbai especially. Although the maximum city has a truly cosmopolitan culture, during the Gampati celebrations, the Marathi manoos inside the people comes alive. Street revelers shout Ganpati slogans in Hindi and Marathi and others join in. This can be seen when even Bollywood stars and celebrities take to the roads to immerse their respective idols into water, along with their families and friends. These stars can be seen dancing on the roads, which also makes for a delightful sight for the city’s residents. The festival that is generally celebrated over a period of 11 days, but the immersion happens on several different days like the third, fifth, seventh days. Each day has an auspicious timing, which is considered holy and it is advised that the idol be immersed at that time, to maximize the blessings received by the people. The slogans are a part of the revelry, when the idol is being taken to be immersed into the water body. Before the idol is taken to be immersed into water, there are certain rituals that are performed and offerings are made to it. The offerings consist of flowers, sweets, coconut and oil.
Prayers are also offered at the famous Siddhivinayak temple situated in Dadar, The temple is a pilgrimage site for many many Ganesha devotees, who flock here on the day of Ananta Chaturdashi to pay obeisance to the son of Shiva and Parvati. The lanes and bylanes around the temple are flooded with thousands of men, women and children, making a beeline, just to catch a glimpse of the God in the inner sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Hindus from world over visit the temple, which is known to have special powers and has been able to grant people’s wishes in the past. Devotees swear by one glimpse of the God at Siddhivinayak temple, to fulfill their wishes.
