There have been various questions raised on the matter of feminism and equal rights. There are those who call feminists as the male hating squad, whose aim is to put men down, while others fail to see the need for the concept of feminism all together. The negative comments and remarks that feminists are forced to bare is one of the major reasons for women and men to stay away from the term, be it Hollywood’s Kristen Stewart or Bollywood’s very own Parineeti Chopra.

There are very few people in the entertainment industry who stand by equal rights and feminism. This article is not for them, but for those who question the need for feminism. Can any of you name a fictional novel or series with its main protagonist as a girl or a woman who has to save the world all the while battling her own mood swings and periods and all other problems that girls face? No? That’s the reason we need feminism. (ALSO READ: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mad Max: Fury Road: 2015 – Movies which took feminism on the centre stage!)

Because the books and series that children watch hardly ever show women and all the problems they are bound to face in the world while guys get a comparatively better idea as they are better represented. Now that the need for feminism is established, the next important step is defining feminism. This is the tricky part but with a simple solution. Do you wish to live in a world of equal opportunity where decisions are based off the work and efforts put by people rather than the sexuality of the person? Do you wish to live in a world where your daughter, sister or mother have equal opportunity of growth as you? If your answer is yes for either of the questions then congratulations! You, my dear, are a feminist. Because that’s all feminism is about.

More importantly feminism is also about removing the pressure of patriarchal power from the man’s shoulder and spreading power to the men and women who deserve it and who want it. So the next time you decide to bash people for being feminist remember these questions and think before taking the patriarchal hierarchy forward.
