With the rift within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) deepening, Arvind Kejriwal offered to quit his post as the party’s national convenor, ahead of a crucial meeting of senior party leaders. The Delhi Chief Minister offered to resign just before AAP’s national executive meet on March 4 in which the party decided to remove Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan from the party’s Political Affairs Committee. A war of words has been going on in AAP between Arvind Kejriwal and the two AAP leaders. (Also read: AAP removes Yogendra Yadav from Political Affairs Committee)
Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan alleged that there is no internal democracy in AAP. While Dilip Pandey, AAP Delhi Unit chief, claimed that the two leaders were conspiring against Kejriwal. We don’t know whose version is correct but one thing is sure that the controversy has defamed the party.
Here are Top 5 reasons why AAP is heading towards a split:
1- Ego problem: The ongoing tussle between AAP leaders seems a result of ego problem. Arvind Kejriwal has been credited for the landslide victory in Delhi Assembly Elections 2015, while leaders like Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan who played a vital role in the party’s comeback found themselves cornered with no appraisal. Thus the lust fo power and position has ignited the fire for a battle between the AAP leaders.
2- Internal Democracy: Prashant Bhushan in his letter wrote that AAP is becoming a one man-centric party and that it lacked transparency. Earlier, Shaziya Ilmi and Vinod Kumar Binny had the same allegations and they quit to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But AAP loyalists are saying that Yadav and Bhushan are power hungry and that the party is not leaving its original path of serving the people.
3- Expansion of AAP: Yogendra Yadav wants to take AAP on a national level by contesting assembly elections of other states, while Arvind Kejriwal is against it. The Delhi CM cleared his view on expansion of the party during his swearing-in ceremony when he said that AAP won’t contest in other states and concentrate on Delhi.
4- Clash on ticket distribution: During Delhi Assembly Elections 2015, the problems with AAP became evident when it was revealed that some candidates fielded by AAP had a dark background. Yadav and Bhushan had opposed the decision to give tickets to them, but the party went ahead with those candidates.
5- Arvind Kejriwal: The soul reason of the tussle is Arvind Kejriwal himself. Considering the fact that Delhi CM also holds AAP’s national convenor post, he is the centre of attraction of AAP while other party leaders are sidelined. Yadav and Bhushan want that other leaders should also get importance to expand the party in other states.
No matter who is correct, this conflict has triggered an ugly war in AAP. If such controversies continue, the new political outfit would not survive for a long time. (Edited by Shweta Parande)
