Guwahati, May 19: Electoral process in the states of Assam, West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry has been completed. Election Commission of India would declare the results today. The counting of votes has been initiated. The primary electoral battle was contested between the incumbent Congress and the saffron-ethnic coalition led by BJP. The latter had projected BJP leader and Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as its chief ministerial candidate. On the other hand, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi gave the charge of the campaign to reigning chief minister Tarun Gogoi. The 79-year-old veteran leader is eyeing to occupy the CM chair for the fourth consecutive time. The third factor in this election is the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led by Maulana Badruddin Ajmal. The party enjoys a significant clout among the state’s 34 per cent strong Muslim population.
