South African opener Dean Elgar said that sledging has encouraged him to score a hundred at Perth which helped the visitors to post a massive total on board. Dean Elgar, who scored 12 in the first innings, tormented Australian bowling during his 127 runs innings in the second innings. His innings helped South Africa to set a massive total like on board. South Africa in their second innings lost two quick wickets but recovered well from their early setback. Elgar along with JP Duminy built a 250 runs second innings partnership that keep the visitors in right track.
While Elgar scored 127, middle-order batsman JP Duminy scored 141. The much-needed partnership has made a big difference in the match. After Duminy’s departure Elgar built another short partnership with Faf du Plessis, who scored 32. When Elgar was dismissed South Africa was at 324 for 4. However, Faf du Plessis and Temba Bevuma failed to stay long at the crease. But it didn’t affect South Africa’s finely shaped innings. Later in the innings wicket-keeper-batsman, Quinton de Kock and allrounder Vernon Philander did an outstanding job as they built an 116 run partnership which helped South Africa to set a massive target for the Australians.
However, credit must go to Elgar and JP Duminy who faced the fury of Australian fast bowlers at the initial stage of the second innings. They tormented the Australian bowlers and made sure that they lost their confidence and energy. Elgar, who scored his fourth hundred, alleged that Australian fielders have sledged him to distract his concentration. “When I was batting Australian players have reminded again and again the same thing. By doing so, the Australian players were trying to put pressure on me to get my wicket quickly. They sledged me to get my wicket, but it encouraged to score a ton,” says Elgar. Elgar says, “Warner and the Lyon were sledging me that made my batting easier.” Elgar further added that he is happy for his teammate JP Duminy. “I am very happy for Duminy. He was suffering from a lean patch, especially in the long format. So a hundred in Test cricket will help him to gain the confidence, “Elgar added.
