Bairabi Railway Station: The Indian Railways, one of the largest railway networks in the world, manages and operates a staggering 7,461 railway stations across the country, with Uttar Pradesh having a whopping 1,173 train stations, the highest in India, followed by Maharashtra (689), Bihar (768), Madhya Pradesh (550), and Gujarat (509).

But did you know that there is an Indian state which has just one railway station? Let us find out more.

This state has a single railway station

We are talking about the tiny northeastern state of Mizoram, which effectively stands at the end of India’s border in the northeast, and the Indian railway line ends here at this station.

Located in Kolasib district of Mizoram, the Bairabi railway station, which consists of three platforms, essentially serves the entire 1.25 million (12.25 lakh) population of the state.

The Bairabi railway station, which carries the station code BHRB, is one of the railhead of Mizoram and connected with a 84.25 km long broad-gauge railway line, connecting Katakhal Junction to Bairabi, which was completed in March 2016. The tiny station features four train tracks, and was given a facelift in 2016, adding modern amenities to this train station, which is located 90 kms away from Mizoram capital Aizawl.

Bairabi-Sarang railway line plan

Notably, the Indian Railways plans to build a new railway line from Bairabi to Sairang, aimed at connecting Aizawl to rest of the national railway network, however, Mizoram’s hilly terrain makes railway construction a challenging endeavor, hence the limited rail connectivity in the remote state.

The proposed51 km long railway line from Bairabi station to Sairang railway station near Aizawl will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 2,384 crore.

Mizoram is the only state in India with a single railway station.
