A 20-day old video of Republican Senator Josh Hawley is doing rounds on the internet where he says to ban the social media app TikTok on all government devices. #BanTikTokinIndia bags the top spot in trends on Twitter. In the viral video, Josh Hawley has said that he plans on introducing legislation to ban widely-used Chinese video making app TikTok, which is owned by Bytdance, on all federal government devices. It all started when a statement released by TikTok stated that they have users’ information. “We collect information about the device you use to access the Platform, including the IP address, unique device identifiers, a model of your device, your mobile carrier, time zone setting, screen resolution, operating system, app, and file names and types, key-stroke patterns or rhythm patterns”, the statement read. TikTok has recently donated medical equipment and supplies worth Rs 100 crore in order to help India fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The supply includes 400,000 hazmat medical protective suits and 200,000 masks to protect doctors and front line medical staff.
