Basant Panchami 2017: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi wish the nation on Saraswati Puja

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday February 1, 2017 greeted the nation on the occasion of Basant Panchami. On Vasant Panchami i.e the fifth day of the onset of spring Saraswati Puja is celebrated with much pomp and fervor in states of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This day the goddess of knowledge from Hinduism Saraswati is worshiped. The festival is celebrated across schools and colleges and predominantly students take part in the festivities. Basant Panchami or Saraswati Puja is the two main festival of spring season, the other being Holi. On this day people wear yellow as the colour is associated with mustard flowers and mango blooms. On Saraswati Puja young girls deck up in sarees and visit the various pandals where the goddess’ idols are being worshiped.

Saraswati Puja is a unique festival as it is celebrated with the mindset that knowledge is important. Along with the Goddess Saraswati, books, pencils and pens are worshiped and revered on this day. This festival is given much importance due to the fact that a student life is very important for the betterment of the individual and society. Many devotees keep fast on this day and eat only fruits, others abstain from eating non-vegetarian fare. Mamata Banerjee also took to Twitter to wish the people. She tweeted, ““Heartiest greetings to all on the occasion of Saraswati Pujo.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Greetings on the special occasion of Basant Panchami.” Rahul Gandhi as well as many leaders took to Twitter to wish the country on the auspicious occasion. Saraswati Puja is an integral part of Hindu culture and has stood the test of time since the period of Rigveda when Goddess Saraswati was first mentioned. Young children are initiated into the learning of alphabets on this day and hence it poses a very important part of the Hindu household traditions. Goddess is Saraswati is also worshiped in the Jain religion of west and central India and is revered as the goddess of knowledge, music and arts outside Nepal and India, such as in Japan, Vietnam, Bali (Indonesia) and Myanmar. The earliest known photograph that has been in circulation of Goddess Saraswati holding the Veena with a peacock nearby (peacock, swan or a goose is associated with Saraswati as her vehicle) was painted by the acclaimed artist Raja Ravi Varma.
