Bengali Bride’s Father Refuses to do His Daughter’s Kanyadaan, Says She is Not a Property to Give Away – Check Tweet

In a first of its kind, a Bengali wedding is going viral on the internet and for all the right reasons. The family invited women priests at their daughter’s wedding to perform the rituals. Not only this, but the father refused to do kanyadaan of his daughter as he believes that his daughter is not a property to give away. The bride’s father gave a speech clarifying his stance on not performing the ritual.

The tweet was shared by one of the guests named Asmita Ghosh present at the wedding about the beautiful incident and since then Twitter has been flooded applauding the father for the gesture. The tweet reads, “I’m at a wedding with female pandits. They introduce the bride as the daughter of <mother’s name> and <father’s name> (mom first!!!). The bride’s dad gave a speech saying he wasn’t doing kanyadaan because his daughter wasn’t property to give away. I’m so impressed.”

The tweets have been retweeted 941 times and have been liked by over 4,000 people. However, the decision to not do the kanyadaan was decided by both the families mutually six months prior to the wedding.

Earlier, a video went insanely viral on social media where Bengali bride not only posed happily for the cameramen but also retorted to the ceremony of Kanakanjali, saying that “you can never repay parents debts”. In the said ceremony, the bride is expected to throw handfuls of rice over to her mother in lieu of having ‘repaid all her debts.’

Though the bride carried forth all the rituals ceremoniously, donning a traditional red-coloured Benarasi saree, she attacked several of these stereotypes and also bid her parents a hearty goodbye with the assurance that she will come back to her house whenever she feels like. The sassy video broke the internet as the netizens wildly lauded her for her rebellious attitude on her wedding day, saying more women need to come out of their conditional impositions and break them by being inspired by her.
