On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, which is observed on February 21, Bhojpuri actress-producer Neetu Chandra released a Bhojpuri song on her YouTube channel ‘Bejod’. The song, titled “Ankhiyan ke paani”, has been directed by her brother and National Award-winning director Nitin Chandra. The song aims to elaborate the significance of the Bhojpuri language and its rich culture, read a statement released today. “I am proud of the fact that I got an opportunity to stand by my roots by showcasing this video on a digital platform,’ said the actress. Neetu has also produced the video, and says that she intends to showcase her mother tongue, Bhojpuri, to the world and let people know about its vibrant and rich culture it stands for. The practice of celebrating International Mother Tongue Day started from 2000 and the theme for this year is linguistic diversity and multilingualism count for sustainable development. On this day, people on social media are urging others to respect their own and other mother languages. A study by the People’s Linguistic Survey of India finds that there are approximately 780 languages in India and 600 of them are slowly dying. This number is exponentially more globally and so is the threat of them being endangered. This day is celebrated in a bid to save these languages from eroding. Neetu who released the video on this special occasion, states that the video has been shot across eight countries, including India, the US, Canada, Singapore and Australia. Neetu’s pride for Bhojpuri is not unknown. She was recently in the news for slamming actor Sidharth Malhotra. It all started when Aiyaary team visited Bigg Boss, Manoj Bajpyee asked Sidharth Malhotra to deliver a dialogue in Bhojpuri: ‘Shikar to sab kehu karela, lekin baagh jaisan sikar kehu na kare’. After repeating the lines, Sidharth reportedly said “Aisa lag raha ki neeche baitha hua hai, latrine me. Bathroom me kar rahe hain kli kaha hain?” This prompted Neetu to express her disappointment on Twitter, after which Sidharth apologised.
