Bimbisara treasure: During the course, India was ruled by powerful and wealthy kings and emperors, and many of these monarchs have allegedly left behind hidden treasure troves in various parts of the country. According to legend, one such place exists in Bihar’s ancient Nalanda district where a treasure is said to be buried in a mysterious cave. Read on to find out more about this legendary treasure.

The Bimbisara treasure

As per local legends, a treasure is hidden in a mysterious cave in the ancient city of Rajgir in Nalanda, but the cave has been closed for hundreds of years, making it nearly impossible to access the fabled treasure trove. Legends claims that the treasure belongs to King Bimbisara, a wealthy monarch of the Magadha Empire in 540 BC who founded the Haryanka dynasty, that ruled the ancient Indian state, from 544 BC to 413 BC.

As the story goes, King Bimbisara converted to Buddhism and gave away most of his wealth to the poor, which irked his son, Ajatshatru, who felt cheated out of his inheritance and ultimately killed his father to lay claim to his wealth.

However, before Ajatshatru, could grab the gold, Bimbisara’s wife secretly handed it to a Jain monk named Vaira Devan, hid the treasure in the caves and sealed it with a ‘magical lock’, or so the legend goes. Bimbisara treasure is believed to hidden in the Son Bhandar caves in Bihar, located at the base of the Vaibhar Hills in Rajgir.

Apart from the gold and other valuables, the queen also gave away her jewelry to the monk, which is also said to included in the hidden Bimbisara treasure.

Attempts to find the hidden treasure of Bimbisara

Over the centuries, there have been hundreds of attempts by treasure hunters to find the hidden Bimbisara treasure, including the British, who even tried to force entry into the legendary caves by blasting the walls with explosives.

Legend claims that the entry to the caves is sealed with a ‘magical lock’, and an inscription in the caves holds the so-called ‘password’ required to access the treasure. Interestingly, no one has yet been able to decipher the inscription. Others believe that only King Bimbisara knew the way to access the caves, and he apparently took the secret to his grave.

Notably, according to archeologists, the Son Bhandar caves, are believed to be from the third or fourth century and are some of the last surviving rock-cut caves in India.
