British Parliament Celebrates March 27 as Turban Day Following Racist Attack Outside Parliament in London Last Month

Do you know that March 27 is being celebrated as Turban Day by the British Parliament? So, what is it and why is it being celebrated? You must have heard about the racist attack on a Sikh person named Ravneet Singh. A British citizen had tried to remove the turban of  Singh when he was trying to get a pass to enter the Parliament House to meet some politician. The incident which took place about a month ago had caused disturbance among the Sikh community. Following the incident, a manhunt was launched and just three days back a CCTV footage was released which shows Singh being approached by a man who shouted “Muslim go back” before attempting to remove his turban, said Scotland Yard, the police force in London.

Soon after this, the British Parliament decided to celebrate March 27 as Turban Day in order to let the British people know about the Sikh community. It was reported that all the MPs would wear turban during the celebration. Meanwhile, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh (GK), said the Indian government should pay attention towards the demands of the Sikh community.

Importance of the Sikh Turban or Dastaar

With Turban Day being celebrated, let us see what is the importance of Turban for the Sikhs. 

For a Sikh, the turban also known as the dastaar, is a religious requirement which has been made mandatory by their Guru. It represents faith for male Sikhs and there are no if’s and but’s about wearing it. However, it happens to be optional for women. The turban has a special cultural and spiritual significance and is also a symbol of royalty. In India, the turban automatically assumes the place of a crown. It is the turban which makes a Sikh- a sardaar, which means lord or chief.
