A restaurant in Texas has come under heavy criticism for its pictures on bathroom doors. Dodie’s Place Cajun Bar & Grill in Allen, Texas, has the pictures of Caitlyn Jenner before and after her gender transition to signal men and ladies’ washroom. The restaurant in a caption shared alongside the image reads, “Come meet our newest members of Dodie’s crew, Caitlyn & Bruce! Stop in for our weekly specials, served all day!” The image got viral after Dallas Morning News editor Dom DiFurio posted an image of the bathroom doors on Twitter. He shared the picture with the caption, “What’s going on here Dallas?”

The women’s restroom has a picture of Vanity Fair cover of Jenner, while the men’s room had an image of Jenner winning the Olympic gold in the decathlon at the 1976 Montreal Games. According to a Facebook post by the restaurant, the photos of Jenner has been in use since August. While many on social media thought it to be a joke and considered it creative, many thought it was insensitive. People also commented saying it was ‘offensive’, ‘disgusting’ and ‘insensitive’.

After the pictures went viral on social, the restaurant took to social media to apologize. In the post, the restaurant explains that they did not mean to offend anyone and believe that “name calling and words like transphobic, deviant, racist, homophobic, bigot, etc. serve nothing but to continue to divide us instead of uniting us.”

Caitlyn Jenner underwent gender reassignment surgery in January 2017, almost two years after she revealed her decision to transition. She also legally changed her name from William Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn Marie Jenner.

Their post further reads, “First and foremost, our intention was not to make fun of or offend anyone when we installed the pictures of Bruce and Caitlyn on our bathroom doors.” Defending the reason for sharing the picture, they wrote, “It was merely a lighthearted gesture to push back against the political correctness that seems to have a stranglehold on this country right now.” DiFurio told Daily Dot that Allen isn’t necessarily in a progressive area, which may explain why the restaurant went out of its way to make fun of Jenner. The bathroom’s prospective audience doesn’t excuse the joke, though. After all, plenty of LGBTQ people live in red states.
