The 10th anniversary of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto was celebrated yesterday on July 22, 2017 amid much fanfare and euphoria. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also attended the 10th anniversary of the temple and hailed the temple as an architectural masterpiece and a place for community. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau looked dapper in traditional Indian attire. He wore a blue Indian kurta and pajama, with a flower garland around his neck. The Prime Minister took part in the prayer rituals with Mahant Swami Maharaj. The celebrations also saw the attendance of former ministery of external affairs (MEA) spokesperson and current Indian ambassador to Canada, Vikas Swarup. The attendance of Justin Trudeau held special significance for the people as at the opening of the temple on July 22, 2007 the then-prime minister Stephen Harper was in attendance.
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is built with 6000 tonnes of marble and stone, mined in Italy and Turkey and it took 1500 people to hand-carve the pieces which were then assembled in Canada over the span of 18 months. The temple is made to last 1000 years and no steel has been used in its making. Mahant Swami Maharaj who is the sixth spiritual guru of Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) received a key to the city of Toronto from mayor John Tory during the celebration on Saturday evening. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to his Twitter account and shared pictures of the ceremony along with the words, “The BAPS Mandir is more than an architectural masterpiece – It’s truly a place for community. Toronto Mayor John Tory said in a press release, “I am honoured to recognise his Holiness’ global and Toronto-based humanitarian, charitable, and community-building efforts through BAPS Charities Canada. His Holiness’ great contributions have enriched Toronto.” The Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) is a socio-spiritual Hindu organization headed by Mahant Swami Maharaj. The temple is the largest of its kind in Canada and was constructed according to the guidelines outlined in ancient Hindu scriptures.
