Love doesn’t need a special day, yet February 14 has become a date dedicated to romance. As the air fills with love and affection, let’s talk about someone who is often called the greatest lover in history—Casanova. His name has become a synonym for charm and flirtation over the centuries. Giacomo Girolamo Casanova was born in 1725 in Venice, Italy. His parents were theater artists, but he had different aspirations. He studied law, dreamt of becoming a doctor, and even served as a priest and a librarian. However, he became famous not for his career but for his romantic escapades.
Casanova’s love life was legendary, he reportedly had affairs with around 200 women, ranging from 13 to 40 years old. His first romance began at just 11 when he fell for his teacher’s daughter. Throughout his life, he was always in pursuit of new love interests, charming and then moving on.
But Casanova wasn’t just a womanizer, he believed in the power of words in love. In his autobiography, The Story of My Life, he wrote that any honest woman’s heart could be won with the right words. According to him, silence wastes two-thirds of love.
Casanova’s opinions about women were often contradictory. At the age of 14, he had his first intimate experience with two of his cousins, aged 14 and 16, an event he claimed changed him forever. Over time, his perspective on women kept evolving. In one of his writings, he stated that if a woman was only beautiful but not intelligent, she would mean nothing more than a body to a good man. He believed intelligence in women was an admirable quality.
According to a BBC report, Casanova studied mathematics, chemistry, and medicine. His first job was in the church, where he even requested permission to read books banned by the Pope. Later, he used his writing skills to pen secret love letters for high-ranking officials. However, when one of his own affairs was exposed, he was expelled from the church. He then tried his luck in the military, worked as a violinist in an orchestra, became a lawyer, and even took up professional gambling. Eventually, he set off on long travels across Europe.
Casanova had a natural ability to charm wealthy women with his words. He wrote and sold stories about his romantic encounters, making his love life a source of both entertainment and income. His actions eventually got him arrested in Paris, but he managed to escape from prison and spent years moving from one European country to another.
Casanova is believed to have had romantic relationships with around 200 women. However, it was his detailed storytelling about these affairs that made him truly famous. In 1820, his family published his memoirs in German, and in 1960, they were translated into English. Over time, he became a legendary figure, symbolizing the ultimate romantic and charming lover.
One of the many women whose heart Casanova broke was Manon Balletti. At just 17, she fell deeply in love with him, leaving behind her fiancé, who was 30. She wrote him 42 love letters and even pawned a pair of diamond earrings to help bail him out of jail. However, throughout their three-year relationship, Casanova repeatedly betrayed her trust.
It’s impossible to know how many times Casanova ran through the streets of Venice or rowed its canals in pursuit of his lovers. He had to be discreet, as many of the women he pursued were married. He spent much of his youth lingering around grand palaces, chasing wealthy women.
In 1756, Casanova was officially banned from Venice. He managed to escape from a palace prison and never looked back. From then on, he wandered from city to city, continuing his romantic escapades.
By the age of 60, Casanova settled in Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) as a librarian. He spent his later years alone, bitter, and suffering from syphilis, reminiscing about his past. On the advice of his doctor, he began writing about his experiences. His memoir, The Story of My Life, has since become an international bestseller.
