As if people burning crackers were not enough, a BJP leader fired shots in the air to perform the ‘9 baje 9 minute’ task assigned by PM Narendra Modi to mark solidarity in the times of the coronavirus. It was on Thursday that PM addressed the nation in his 9 minutes speech and requested all to switch off lights at 9 pm on Sunday, April 5, and light a diya, candle, torch or a lamp to show unity and hope in these tough times. However, people once again interpreted PM’s clear request in their own way. While some celebrated Diwali to ward off the coronavirus and burst crackers, some like BJP’s Manju Tiwari, who’s the Mahila Ziladhyaksh from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh, did firing in the air. What is more deplorable is that she took pride in using the pistol and uploaded the video on her own Twitter handle. As soon as the video was uploaded, it went viral as several Twitter users shared it widely asking UP CM Yogi Adityanth to take strict action against her. Many Twitter users pointed out how the BJP members are always ahead in letting their PM down. As she got booked by the UP Police for firing in the air, Manju Tiwari later apologised in a statement citing that she ‘felt it was Diwali’ because people were lighting earthen lamps and candles. News agency ANI quoted her saying, “I saw the entire city illuminating with candles & earthen lamps. I felt like it was Diwali & fired in the air out of jubilation. I accept my mistake & apologise for it.”

Another BJP leader, Tiger Raja Singh from Goshamahal in Telengana organised an entire procession with a group of around 20 people. They lit flaming torches in hands and asked the ‘corona’ to ‘go back’ the way exorcists expel evil spirits in Hindi movies. Check this out:

Leave common men aside, it’s the members of the BJP in the first place who are finding it difficult to understand the protocols of lockdown and the meaning of self-isolation. These videos are definitely fun but also raise an important concern. What do you think?
