Dangal and Bahubali 2 is undoubtedly two of the biggest Indian movies of all time. Their battles on the domestic and worldwide box office have been intense and at present it Aamir Khan-starrer biopic leading SS Rajamouli-directed magnum opus. 2016 film Dangal added another feather to its cap by becoming the fifth highest grossing non-English movie of all time. Aamir Khan’s film has earned USD 301 million and counting while Prabhas-Anushka Shetty’s Bahubali 2 movie box office collection is USD 235 million. For Dangal, China proved to be the happy hunting ground with collections touching almost Rs 1200 crore while 2017 film Baahubali: The Conclusion is yet to release in China.
World cinema is dominated by English movies, with a majority coming from Hollywood. The box office collection figures of their films are sky-rocketing, but that does not make foreign language based movies any smaller. There are five non-English movies in history that have earned more than USD300 million worldwide. It is led by China’s The Mermaid (USD 533 million or Rs 3575,79,30,000 crore) and Monster Hunt (USD386 million or Rs 2489,56,49,000 crore), France’s The Intouchables (USD427 million or Rs 2756,07,15,000 crore) and Japan’s Your Name (USD354 million or Rs 2283,31,77,000 crore). Dangal with USD301 million or approx. Rs 1941,46,50,500 crore landed the fifth place in the prestigious list and expected to soar higher. Meanwhile, Bahubali 2 has earned USD 235 million which is approx. Rs 1516, 80,75,000 crore.
Nitesh Tiwari directed Dangal saw Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist, Aamir Khan essay the role of Mahavir Phogat, a former Indian wrestler and coach of world champion wrestlers – Geeta and Babita Phogat. The biopic saw the journey of India’s first female wrestler who won the gold medal for the country, Geeta Phogat played by actress Fatima Sana Shaikh. Geeta had bagged gold in the Commonwealth Games 2010, and she also became the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the Olympics in 2012. Her sister, Babita Kumari has also won the silver medal in 2010 Commonwealth Games. Actress Sanya Malhotra played her role in the film.

Dangal is also the first and only Indian film with an overseas gross exceeding USD100 million. With the film still playing in in China, Taiwan and more territories, it is expected that Aamir Khan’s blockbuster has a good chance of surpassing Japanese film Your Name in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the release date of Bahubali 2 film in China has also been announced. On September 17, the Hindi movie fans in China can watch Prabhas-Rana Daggubati war saga on the silver screen. The film which has currently minted around Rs 1516 plus crores worldwide would hope similar welcome from the Chinese audiences as Dangal received.
