India tried to perform the ‘9 baje 9 minute’ task assigned by PM Modi to the T but some people still misunderstood PM’s request and began to celebrate Diwali. PM, in his last address to the nation, requested all to light a candle, diya or a lamp to show solidarity with those who are fighting the coronavirus and leave a message of unity. However, people, especially in Delhi, confused Sunday, April 5, with the celebrations of Diwali and started bursting crackers. Several celebrities and others took to social media to complained about crackers being burst in various parts of the capital to mark the day as a loud celebration rather than observing it as a silent day while lighting a ray of hope. Actor Sonam Kapoor, who’s currently living with her husband Anand Ahuja in Delhi, also took to Twitter to talk about those who completely misunderstood the meaning of PM’s request and celebrated Diwali with crackers causing air pollution. Many people highlighted how COVID-19 is a disease of the lungs and causes respiratory problems and some are celebrating the pandemic. Sonam’s tweet read, “There was complete peace and quite, and now the birds ,dogs and sirens are freaking out in south Delhi because some morons decided to burst fire crackers tonight” (sic). It’s ridiculous to see how Indians are in a habit of going an extra mile while following PM’s request and performing stupid activities even in the times of the coronavirus when a collective health crisis is lingering on our heads and all we have been asked to do is to stay indoors and not do anything that weakens our lungs further.
