While the country danced to the rhythm of Holi on Monday, these female students of Delhi University had to spend the day indoors. Two girl’s hostel authorities owned by Delhi University barred female students from celebrating the colorful festival. A notice by International Student House for Women says that the decision was taken “in the best interest of residents”. Dated March 1, 2017, the notice issued by the management read, “Residents and female guests will not be allowed to leave or enter the premises from 9 pm on March 12 till 6 pm on March 13. No late night permission will be granted on March 12 and those desirous of playing Holi should go outside the residential block within the hostel premises.”
According to the notice, the House Management had to take the decision in the interest of the residents and “to make Holi enjoyable for all”. Meghdoot Hostel, also managed by Delhi University issued a similar notice to its students which had restrictions for women. The notice read, “The main gate will remain closed from 6 am to 5.30 pm on 13 March”. However, this time, the girl decided to make the infamous notice by the management become popular. The notice which was shared on social media by ‘Pinjra Tod: Break the Hostel Locks’ an online platform which fights against illogical rules against women across hostel of various universities and paying guests. Their Facebook post reads, “Every year, women students across colleges and universities in the city are forcefully confined inside the hostel the whole day on Holi, and also not allowed any late nights or night-outs. The rise in sexual violence and harassment that women experience on the streets around Holi, is barely addressed, and instead, once again, women are locked up for their ‘own safety’ and arbitrary restrictions are imposed on their mobility.”

The repressive nature of hostels and paying guests for women has been a common rule since very long. Most of these rented places apply rules especially on women making it difficult to them.
