In a heartwarming video that has gone viral, an elderly Sikh man beats the drum to wake up his Muslim neighbours for Sehri, or the pre-dawn Ramzan meal. The social media is abuzz with the short clip. The unidentified Sikh man seems to have taken the responsibility of the role of ‘Seharkhwaan’, or a public waker for the Sehri meal in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. Sehri is the pre-dawn meal consumed during the month of Roza. The 21-second video clip has been widely shared on various social media platforms in the state.
“Allah Rasool de pyaaro, jannat de talabgaro, utho roza rakho (The beloved of Allah and his messenger, the seekers of paradise, wake up to start your fast),” the elderly Sikh man shouts before starting to beat his drum. His gesture has earned him quite the praise on social media with several netizens lauding for being an embodiment of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence that has existed in the Kashmiri culture for centuries.
Seharkhwaan is the term used for the drum beaters who go around a locality to wake up its residents for the pre-dawn meal before the start of dawn-to-dusk fast during Ramzan. The role is usually undertaken by a member of the Muslim community but members of minority community doing it is rare but not new. The holy month of Ramadan is of great importance to the Islamic calendar as it is said that it was during this month that the Holy Quran was first released. The Muslims have Sehri before they begin their daily fast, and have Iftar after dusk.
