Elephants may be huge in size, but they feel as much cold as any one of us. Taking into view the dipping temperature that has been taking over Northern India, women in the village are stitching huge sweaters to help them beat the cold. The giant animals in Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura can now be seen sporting colorful knitted sweaters and pyjama-like garments. The women knitted sweater after the temperature dip below zero degree celsius. Also, the elephants seem to look happy in their new outfit.
The elephants were rescued from illegal captivity, street begging, trafficking mafia and from circus places. Some of them were suffering badly under cruel bosses for decades. While some have been forced to do hard work in bad conditions which have affected their physical strength. The animals in their new home are given healthy food and good veterinary care and are allowed roam around freely in peace. Reportedly, the warm clothes take a month to complete and the women are stitching more such sweaters for rest of the elephants.
The Care Center is currently home to 20 rescued elephants of which some of them are blind or lame. They also run Elephant Rehabilitation Centre in Haryana that is home for three female elephants.
Times of India quoted Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS as saying, “It is important to keep our elephants protected from the bitter cold during this extreme winter, as they are weak and vulnerable having suffered so much abuse making them susceptible to ailments such as pneumonia. The cold also aggravates their arthritis which is a common issue that our rescued elephants have to deal with.”
The organisation is planning to rescue more 50 elephants in 2017, and wants to expand the sanctuary. Elephant Conservation and Care Center created in 2010 is a project by Wildlife SOS in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department. The Care Center has 20 elephants including 13 females and 7 male elephants. The center has open fields in natural habitat for their daily walks. Water pools have also been provided for them to bath and play.
