As Indians, we are known for creative hacks in our day to day life. From crockery to automobiles, we are good at our innovations that have made our life simpler. Adding to the list of such things is a neem tree from Delhi which showed its multiple usages. This tree not only has leaves, branches, and trunk but provides free booze! We are not high and this is true. A neem tree in Delhi University is offering an open bar for free of cost. A neem tree in the campus has been lactating a white liquid since four months that gets people high. Mostly labourers are trying this new drink that not only keeps them high-spirited but also hydrated. People are queuing up in front of the neem for the daily dose (Well, had to be). And the people are in all praises for the tree which also tastes better.
Delhi University seems to have a lot of solutions to people’s problems. The university was in the news for quite a unique reason recently. Singles of Hindu college in the campus were offering prayers to a virgin tree also known as ‘Damdami tree’ on Valentine’s Day so that they find their better half at the earliest. While there are only 15 neem trees in the area of the campus of which some are more than 50 years old. But it is only one tree that is giving al least 10 litres of free drink a day. Hindustan Times quoted, Mahesh Prasad, the head gardener of North Campus as saying, “A neem tree has been secreting a white liquid since November 2016. It smells of toddy (naturally alcoholic sap of palm) and tastes somewhat bitter. But people from the campus and outside collect it to drink. They say it is intoxicating.”
It is also easy to locate the tree due to the smell of toddy that lingers around at least 10 feet or more. After the popularity of the tree grew, people have been visiting the tree with buckets and bottles. To ensure not a drop is wasted, a bucket has been hung to the tree to collect the liquid. However, experts are of the opinion that the tree could be diseased and people should stop consuming it. Dr MM Padhi was quoted saying that the white fluid suggests that the tree suffers from a bacterial infection.
