This FRIENDS fan started ‘In Defense of Rachel and Joey: A Thread’ on twitter and began explaining exactly why Rachel should not have ended up with Ross. The 100 tweets long rant highlighted everything that is wrong with Ross and Rachel’s platonic relationship and how they brought out the worst in each other. From the times where Joey set Rachel up with his friends to being there for her and taking care of her every time she needed advice or just a shoulder to cry on, Joey has done it all, and there is no doubt that Joey’s character was the purest at heart and absolutely adorable. However, the fan goes on to say Joey was the only person who always stopped Ross from going after Rachel and saying that her choice matters. But there is a scene in the first season of FRIENDS which shows that the one person who gave Ross the confidence to confess his love for Raches was Joey himself!

In the iconic and fun blackout episode, Joey explains to Ross how he is the Friendzone and then went on to push him into asking Rachel out. Now we all know that Ross couldn’t actually confess his love in this episode, but after this, it is once again Joey who said it out loud that Ross loves Rachel! Joey played a key role in shaping Ross and Rachel’s relationship and this simple fact from the earlier seasons of FRIENDS proves that he was not always in love with Rachel green. Coming to the whole Joey brings out the best in Rachel while Ross brings out the worst theory, it was very clear that they did not intend to show beautiful fairy tale endings in the TV Show.
The thing that made FRIENDS so beautiful was actually the fact that all characters had flaws. From choosing to show different ways of motherhood in Pheobe, Rachel and Monica’s pregnancy to the different relationships they all had. And there is no doubt that Ross and Rachel were not perfect together because they were never supposed to be. The best thing about Ross and Rachel’s relationship was that they had to put in efforts into making it work, much like real life relationships. And even though we would have loved having a happy ending for Joey as well, Rachel and Ross’s relationship made a very important point, and any other ending would not have done justice to the show.
