India is geared up to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayak Chaturthi today on August 25, 2017. The ten-day festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha is one of the most popular and well-loved festivals of India. Lord Ganesha is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and was given a boon due to which he is prayed first in any puja or yagna. Ganesh Chaturthi is the biggest festival that is celebrated with much pomp and fervor in Maharashtra and holds special significance in the hearts of the people. Renowned freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak started the celebrations for Ganesh Chaturthi on a mass scale to tie all the Hindus together during the Indian freedom struggle. Since then the festival has only grown bigger. Lalbaugcha Raja and other huge and popular pandals in Mumbai see horde of visitors coming to pay their respects to the deity who is the harbinger of prosperity and good luck. President of India Ram Nath Kovind, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Smriti Irani and many Bollywood actors took to their Twitter account to wish the people of the country a happy and joyous Ganesh Chaturthi. Yesterday many celebrities like Vivek Oberoi brought home the idol of Lord Ganesha. Unlike other major festivals of India Ganpati celebrations are also special because the idol of the deity is brought into our homes unlike Durga Puja, Kali Puja or Lakshmi Puja. People keep the idol for 1.5 days, 3 days, 5, days, 7 days or 10 days. On Anant Chaturdashi that is the last day of Ganesh festival the idol is immersed in the water. The Ganpati festival will be celebrated for ten days starting from today. On the tenth day that is Anant Chaturdashi the idols will be immersed into the water and the festival comes to an end. Anant Chaturdashi will be celebrated this year on September 5, 2017.
