While some people want tobacco and liquor to be categorised under the essential services, a Kerala man even went to the court seeking home delivery of liquor. Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor too clamoured for the government opening the licensed liquor stores. “Don’t get me wrong. Man will be at home only what with all this depression, uncertainty around. Cops, doctors, civilians etc… need some release. Black mein to sell ho hi raha hai,” he tweeted.

In some US states, golf, guns and ganja have been ruled essential, raising eyebrows and in the case of guns a good deal of ire. Some gun shops which were earlier closed are now being opened.

In many places, booze is also on the list of essentials.


At first, Britain kept liquor stores off its list of businesses allowed to remain open, but after reports of supermarkets running out of beer, wine and spirits, the government quickly added them.

Internet is, of course, under essential services everywhere.


Shops specializing in pasty, wine and cheese have been declared essential businesses.
